Who Are the Customers of the Recycled Plastics?
Who Are the Customers of the Recycled Plastics?
• Major brands have all committed to used minimum 25% PCR in their packaging by 2025
• EU, Australia and several US states have set the mandatory PCR rate
• The major PCR suppliers are in EU and NA
However
• There is a huge gap between the plastics recycling infrastructures in Asia and those in the EU and NA, causing a low acceptance of PCR sourced from Asia
• There is no plastics industry organization in APAC to unite the strategies and measures to promote the circular economy along the plastics value chain, which include
• Recyclability design guide for plastic packaging/products
• Formal infrastructure construction to collect and sort post- consumer plastics at scale • PCR certification which meets the global standards
• Alignment with global associations on plastics recycling
• The local plastics industry has very limited influence on the government policies for the plastics sustainability
Manifesto of ASPA:
To unite the plastics industry in Asia-Pacific region to
1. Identify and implement business solutions to curb the plastics pollution
2. Share the best practice and marketing guidance to promote the plastics circular economy
3. Foster a global collaboration and alignment with the counterparts in other regions
4. Encourage the practical innovations on sustainable plastics, including the mechanical/chemical recycling of plastics, readily degradable plastics, low-carbon footprint technologies for plastics alternatives, etc.
