What is HIPS?
Hips started to develop rubber modified polystyrene (i.e. high impact polystyrene, hips) in 1950, mainly to solve the impact brittleness of PS. By adding rubber to polystyrene substrate, various grades of high impact polystyrene with different properties can be produced. In recent years, hips of various special grades have been developed, including flame retardant grade, stress cracking resistance grade, high gloss grade, extremely high impact strength grade, glass fiber reinforced grade and low residual volatile grade. The outstanding characteristics of high impact polystyrene are easy processing, excellent dimensional stability, high impact strength and high rigidity. Hips is only in heat resistance. There are certain limits on oxygen permeability, UV stability and oil resistance. The properties of hips are closely related to the content of rubber phase in the system.
Hips is mainly used as packaging and disposable materials, especially food packaging materials and tableware. The main applications include daily packaging containers. Cups, covers and plates for vending machines and sub packaging. Bowls, etc. Disposable products such as discs, bottle caps, safety razors, pen holders, etc. are also part of the uses with large consumption of hips.
In recent years, special products have become the focus of hips product development. Newly developed hips products can compete with engineering resins in some application fields, and some of them are much higher in quality than current products. Instruments and consumer appliances are one of the growing markets for hips products, including small instruments, inner wall and internal parts of refrigerators, TV shells, air conditioning components, commercial machines and audio and video tape boxes.
